For this sculpture plan I will be using air dry clay as well as sticks t make it stable. The size is to make it appear small and give the character justice that she is in fact a child. If a success I wil paint it and display it along with the final outcome/ story.

During the progress I realized that the clay I was dealing with was old and was already drying up. Water could make it usable but it did suffer as time did dry up the material which overall made the progress hard. I managed to smooth out the face and make the tarsal. The head was connected to the body with a stick  which the neck covered up. During this point I started to think of other ways of creating this work as this clay was a major issue and the size of the piece. The size makes it hard to add and carve detail and with the material covered in water to make it use able was a struggle.

Over struggling with the material I managed to give the figure arms, ears and make the start on the legs. at this point Its starting to go well, Spending more time with the sculpture it will be able to finally turn into the desired form.

At this point I knew this sculpture wasn't going to work in my favor with the clay drying up and parts of it already dried up and the size didn't help much either.

After adding hair to the sculpture and attempting to fix the arm i knew there was no way to save this other than to start over with a completely new material (better clay, playdoh ect) and fix the size measurements to make the sculpture lager so there is more room for detail and for errors which can be fixed.

I though about making a sculpture that is bade from cardboard and then go over the top with clay so i can save on materials and it would make the main build of the sculpture easier to build. That or to make it flat with wire that stands up. I have learnt from this to really not play safe with scale as I did want to keep it safe making it smaller which lead to one of the major issues with this progress.

Attempt no.2

Learning from the last sculpture I bought new and fresh materials to work with and also used foil as the center so the clay wouldn't be heavy and I would also save on the material. (see A1 sheet for plan with measurements) I used wire as a base and connected them with clay and waited for it to dry before molding a torso figure. The progress was long as I worked in small steps with areas drying then moving to another section. The biggest challenge I faced doing this was keeping the clay on the foil and try and get control over the clay.

The first part I noticed with the second attempt was how much better it was to mold the character into how I wanted them to look which is a huge difference already, The one thing I didn't plan which turned out to be a huge issue was a stand for the sculpture. When i reached the stage where i needed to make the sculpture stand up for the exhibit. I first attempted to make a stand out of wire but the clay was too heavy for the wire to hold and my final attempt was to make a lump of clay at the bottom with it covering a large amount of the legs and covering the back so it was able to stand up straight. The attempt was a success but it looked odd so for painting wise I was to paint it the colour of the ground in the story so it was fitting.

The paint work was been a hard progress with trying to cover up areas that are in tight spots and I didnt have the brush sizes i needed so it was the progress f going over may mistakes over and over again until it was acceptable. I still need to paint over certain areas where the paint has been faint or has brushed over areas making it look like a mess.
