Here i tried to match the theme of the plan and make the work along the lines of black and white than full colour of the orginal drawing.

Planning & Production

Here are plans for experimentation joining together experiments and to see the overall outcome and then move the idea and experiment towards the final outcome.

  1) This is a rough idea of a figure silhouette where the positive area would be the drawing of the gas mask that has been experimented throughout this project.

  2) This one is to merge two works together that is of the scribbled out drawings of secondary images and the image of the gas mask over the top as the main inspiration for this work would be Robert Rauschenberg.

This is just how I planned it but it seemed more dull nad nothing interesting, just as if I just stuck an image on top without any thought so I thought about repeating the image.

It worked out really well and I think the background and the image repeated does create interest.  But it's still not what I'm looking for within the whole theme of war, nuclear apocalypse and the butterfly effect but its a step in the right direction.

Here I tried working with positive and negative with the figure works.

1) I tried using just the single gas mask image and it turned out the negative space made the figure harder to figure out

2)I tried repeating the image and It didn't really work well and was worse than the first one with as the figure was too hard to figure out with the light colours clashing with the dark colours.

   3) This came out perfect after two failures. I used the image from the previous experiment and because the colour palette was level it made the figure simulate visual to see.

I moved the experimentation to another figure I did to try and experiment with different uses of positive and negative to think of a way to do the poster, with the one where the inside of the figure is empty to perhaps fill it up with information and the title/ name for the work or maybe do it the other way around where the figure is filled in with a repetitive image and the background is filled with info.  It's also hard to notice that the center is gas masks because the colour levels it out meaning a second look would make the audaince take full advantage of it.

Poster Planning

Here are some of my rough plans on what I will do for the posters. All of them have a running theme in them and it's that they are directed and talking to the audience like Shepard Fairey's work and I was inspired by Alphonse Mucha and  James Rosenquist. I wanted to use Edward Bernay's method and really make the audience think as well as bring the usage of the same colours into both works (the final piece and the poster.)

This is the first outcome I came out with using photoshop and Indesign on a mac computer. I first scanned my observational drawing onto the computer then the contrast up so the image looked sharper. Over the top, I put a photo filter over the top to give the image a vintage effect. I seemed happy with it at the time and then used borders and text where the inside was transparent. After printing it off on A3 sheet I realized that I wasn't really happy with it and that I could do better.

This work seemed to be along the lines of what I was looking for but its hard to make out the background image which is the repeated image of the gas mask. But with this, I am going into the right directions. To make this better I will try and make the center image wider so it would fit an A3 sheet and make the background more visible.

Here is the final poster that I will display for the exhibit. The idea is to draw in audience thinking coming would do them good, getting into the mind of the audience members just like how Edward Bernays did with the campaign for Lucky Strikes.

Final Piece

For the outcome I wanted the overall piece to show the separation made throughout the world because of capitalism and communism and wanted it to be like a propaganda piece that'll make the audience really think about how easily an atomic disaster can happen and how easy it is to take control of the situation. The canvases I will use is two 80-30cm's (80cm x 60cm together) and together they would form the same size for an A1 sheet. With the boards for the exhibit being  4ft x 8ft (121.92cm x 243.84cm) meaning the work will be able to be displayed nicely.

The plan I was happy with was a girl laying down wearing typical 1960's clothing, the background would be simple with red and the border being black along with a banner that will celebrate the radiation with hazard signs. To make these I will use acrylic paint, fabric and cotton thread.

Here I did a larger plan on the colours I will be using as well as the placement and size within my sketchbook. I also tried to see what the subject would look like with a gas mask and was second guessing the repeated look for the face.

During the painting stage, I had a lot of issues: The black borders turned out to be not such a good idea, it made the image relate to either world war one or nazi's with the iconic red and black flag and that isn't what I want for when the audience looks at the work so as a last minute fix I decided to go with yellow boarders to give it the advertisement feel.

I went along with the original plan to add in the repeated and overlayed look of the gas mask instead of a casual gas mask look to give the painting that special interesting feature. I chose the colours at hand which was red, yellow, brown and white. I added black for the hair and gave it the messy string like effect to grab the realism.

Once I was finished I cut out triangle shapes out of fabric and soaked them in coffee to get the dirty look. I then sewed in hazard signs that are pop art inspired on a celebrational banner that is made to really mock the idea of an atomic end of the world.
